Using 12 pt Times New Roman with 1-inch margins, one single-spaced page holds about 500 words and one double-spaced page about 250 words. So 1,000 words is about 2 pages single-spaced or 4 pages double-spaced. Fonts, headings and paragraph breaks change the real number, so treat it as an estimate.
Words are runs of letters or numbers separated by spaces, so hyphenated words such as "well-known" count as one. Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line or line break. Reading time assumes 238 words per minute and speaking time 130 words per minute, typical averages for adult readers and presenters.
Paste the essay into the box. The word count appears instantly, along with characters, sentences and paragraphs.
